Happy Spring! I love the flowers that bloom this time year and some of them even make it to my kitchen counter. However, up until a year ago I used to find that my flowers, especially tulips died so fast! I worked for 2 days (yup, only 2 haha) at a flower shop this time last year and learned some tulip tricks that have made a difference in the life of my tulips, so I wanted to share. Here they are:
#1. Always cut flowers under water! – this goes for all flowers, not just tulips. Between the store and home part of the stem has dried up, which prevents the flower from taking up water, so cutting solves this problem
#2. To go along with cutting your flowers once you bring them home, tulips require to be cut up 1.5″ from the bottom. (Other flowers cut 2.5″ from the bottom)
#3. Tulips LOVE cold water. This means you should add a couple of ice cubes to the vase periodically.
#4. If you have some old pennies lying around, add one to the water. All bulb flowers love copper (and yes, tulips are bulb flowers). If you can’t find a penny, I’m sure something else that is copper could work too!
#5. With a pin or sewing needle, pierce a hold through the stem just beneath the flower. It will slow the uptake of water and make the tulip last longer.
#6. DON’T add the flower food! Tulips shouldn’t come with it anyways, but adding it to the water does more harm than good when it comes to tulips.
#7. Replace the water every other day.
Those are the 7 tips! Do you have any others to help tulips last longer or for any other flowers?
